Be informed for you and those you love and that love you.
The Community Outreach Team supported Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September!
Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is the most common genetic disease in the world. Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease in which a person does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. The sickle cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells. Also, when they travel through small blood vessels, they get stuck and clog the blood flow. This can cause pain and other serious complications (health problems) such as infection, acute chest syndrome and stroke. SCD occurs among about 1 out of every 365 Black or African-American births. About 1 in 13 Black or African-American babies are born with sickle cell trait (SCT). It is estimated that 97% or more of Georgia newborns with SCD are Black or African-American. Although there is no universal cure for sickle cell disease, with effective treatment and appropriate medical care, people with SCD can live full lives and enjoy most of the activities that other people do. If you have SCD, it’s important to learn how to stay as healthy as possible. Test your knowledge about Sickle Cell Disease; take this quick quiz.
What is Sickle Cell Trait (SCT) People who inherit one sickle cell gene, and one normal gene have sickle cell trait (SCT). People with SCT usually do not have any of the symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD), but they can pass the trait on to their children. It is important to you your Sickle Cell status.
Please visit Sickle Cell Foundation of Georgia or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information. #StayInformed #BeHealthy #SGACSupportsSickleCell
